Well, where do I start – I was born in Pembroke Dock, Wales, which at the time was a very small town covered in coal dust. I grew up in the 80’s and was influenced by my aunties and uncles love for punk and new romantic music. My first ever pet was a cat called “Nelson”. Nelson was acquired from a mad old cat lady in South Hedland who said that if I caught one of her fifty cats I could keep him. The only cat I could catch was the sick one – I was six and not very athletic.
If you haven’t guessed already, I’m a bit of a mad cat lady myself – though I only have two. When I’m not tending to my cats needs and wants (they have many) I enjoy eating chocolate, thinking about eating chocolate, cooking vegetarian food and watching movies. I like all genre’s of movies and tend to go through genre phases. My favourite Director of all time is Peter Jackson and his best movies are Bad Taste, Meet the Feebles, Braindead and Heavenly Creatures is pretty cool too. In fact my cat Smeagol was named after the character in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy. Nash (my other cat) got her name from the female character in “The Hitcher” a Rutger Hauer movie about an insane, but quite attractive hitchhiker.
I believe my creative streak comes from my father (one time he created a “sloping” room by adjusting the furniture and pictures so that everything sat at an angle) and from a very young age I remember drawing on the wall – which was encouraged in our house. In school I took more art classes than I was supposed to and eventually studied graphics at college and then uni. I had photography classes while studying and when I was given a very cool 25 year old Pentax SLR I started taking snaps of my pets. Then I started drawing my pets…which led to this site.
Of late, I am growing particularly fond of contemporary art and through my blog page I am hoping to research, document and get some feedback on my attempts to produce a distinctive contemporary pet portrait style.
